Wilpattu National Park

Wilpattu, Sri Lanka’s largest and oldest national park, lies in the northwestern region near Anuradhapura. Its name means “Land of Lakes,” thanks to its unique system of natural waterholes or “villus.” Unlike Yala, Wilpattu features thick jungle terrain and wide open spaces where leopards, sloth bears, and elephants roam free. It’s less commercialized and ideal for those seeking peaceful encounters with nature. The safari experience here feels more intimate, often with long stretches without other jeeps, and great chances to observe rare wildlife in silence.
